I disagree that children are being spoiled by their parents.
The term spoiled is use to describe someone who is pampered with extravagance and privileges. However from a general perspective, indeed I see children as young as eight-years-old already owning a cell phone or having enough allowance to spend on clothes or an expensive meal. I see teenagers as young as 13-years-old owning a personal laptop and in addition ¼ of Singaporean children have maids at home to do the housework.
Not too long ago, in the Old Singapore, things such as hand phones or computers are not very common among the youths. Like how my mother would always remind me about the hardships she has to face – labour-intensive hardships; having to sell Nasi Lemak as a form of a part-time job to help relieve the financial burden of the family. It is common sense that most people who had lived through the 19th century understands that kind of hardship and would condemn teenagers who need not experience the same kind of hardship, this is why children are being accused of being “Spoiled”.
These privileges in the eyes of adults are necessary to keep in pace with the current modernization. Children who are going to lead the world in the coming years have to be constantly equipped and educated to be technological smart so as to be able to work efficiently when they are adults. Time can change society but you cannot change time.
For example, the eight-year-old girl who owns a cell phone or having a huge amount of allowance money. Cell phones are considered a third arm to us living in the 21st century. It is a necessity for the common people let alone children. It is our main source of communication. Some parents prefer to give their children cell phones so that they can be constantly in touch with them regardless of where they are; for security reasons. In addition to that, with students and children attending schools in which they travel for hours on bus to reach them, this is why allowances are so large in amount; again for security reasons.
Singapore is developing into a 1st world country or maybe even better. The quality living of Singaporeans in general has risen. As a result, most parents can afford such “extravagances” and “privileges” such as hiring maids to do housework. As a result, children would rather learn how to solve a math equation rather than learn how to hold a broom. This is another phenomenon as a result of globalization which is clearly happening to Singapore. Majority of Singaporeans are becoming more capable and first class intellectual citizens. As a result, we spend so much of our time to improve our intellectual capacity so as to get better jobs or better qualifications. In turn, this eats up a lot of our time and children being our successors are also being affected. Parents would rather send their children for tuition classes and hire maid to do housework so that the children would have a better environment to study.
In conclusion, I don’t think that children are too spoiled by their parents but rather I think it is a necessity to help relieve some of their stress of keeping up with modernization and globalization.
